How to get there
By Air - There are daily flights to Madurai from Chennai, Bangalore, Tiruchi and Coimbatore. Madurai Airport is 15 Kms away from Madurai City.
By Train - Madurai is an important railway junction of the Southern Railway and is directly connected to Chennai and Tirunelveli via the Madurai-Tiruchirappalli-Dindigul-Quilon line. The Vaigai Express - a super-fast day-train travelling between Chennai Egmore and Madurai covers the 495kms in 7 hours.
By Bus - Madurai City has 5 Major bus stands which have excellent connectivity to all major cities in Tamil Nadu.
By Road
There are excellent roads connecting Madurai to all parts of South India. The road from Chennai to Madurai (and beyond to Kanyakumari), is the lifeline of Tamil Nadu. This highway called the Grand Southern Trunk (GST) Road, plays a significant role in connecting the people of Tamil Nadu with its capital, Chennai.
Trichy or Thiruchirapalli is a crowded big city with famous temples, colleges and factories, much of the town can be avoided by taking the Madurai Road. Due to its central location, Trichy has always been a major transport hub of the state. Many of the roads from here have been designated as NH (National Highway) in recent years and some are in the process of being widened into 4 lane highways. NH67 links Trichy to Coimbatore via Karur on the west and Nagapattinam via Thanjavur on the east. The NH45 itself continues onto Dindigul, while the Madurai Road going up to Tuticorin is now NH45B. NH210 connects Trichy to Pudukkottai, Karaikkudi and Ramanathapuram.
There are two roads to Madurai, the shorter one, covered here, was a state highway until a few years ago when it was designated NH45B. This road is also being widened into a 4 lane highway and is, for the most part, rural road on the plains to Madurai. Buses used to cover these 120 kms in 2.5 hours even when it was a Straight Highway. You reach Madurai via Melur and the new Mattuthavani bus stand.
